Each person in Germany uses around 125 liters of tap water a day – and the prices for fresh water and wastewater keep climbing. Yet the biggest saving lever is not the water itself, but the energy locked inside hot water. This article shows, with concrete numbers, what a cubic meter of water costs in 2026, where most of it disappears in the home, and which cheap measures noticeably lower your water and energy bill – without losing comfort.

Water is one of the quiet items in a household budget. It does not hit all at once, it runs day after day, and precisely because of that it is easy to overlook how much money piles up there. An average four-person household pays roughly 600 to 1,000 euros a year for water and wastewater, depending on the region – and that is only half the price. The other part is the energy used to heat much of that water.

The good news: few areas can be trimmed so effectively with so little effort. A water-saving showerhead for 25 euros, an aerator for 8 euros, a conscious look at the washing machine – most measures cost little and take effect immediately. This article does the math without eco-preaching: where your water goes, what it costs, and which moves actually pay off.

How much water a household uses

On average, each person in Germany uses around 121 to 126 liters of tap water a day at home – the official figure for 2023 was 121 liters, older surveys cite 126. For quick mental math, 125 liters per person per day is a good anchor. The long-term trend is remarkable: in 1990 it was still 147 liters, and consumption has fallen since then despite more appliances – more efficient toilets, washing machines and showerheads have saved far more than added comfort consumed.

Over a year, 125 liters a day amounts to roughly 46 cubic meters per person. A four-person household therefore reaches about 180 cubic meters a year. That figure is the starting point for everything else: every percentage point you save here counts twice – once on fresh water and once on wastewater, which is usually tied to the same meter.

What water costs in 2026

The water price consists of two blocks: fresh water (tap water) and wastewater (sewage and often rainwater too). As of 2026, fresh water averages roughly 2.20 euros per cubic meter nationwide, while wastewater is even higher at around 2.40 euros per cubic meter. Together you land at about 4.50 to 5.50 euros per cubic meter, that is per 1,000 liters. On top comes an annual base fee for meter and connection, typically between 80 and 200 euros.

What matters most is the enormous regional spread. Water is priced locally; there is no nationwide tariff. In water-rich areas you may pay under 1.20 euros per cubic meter for fresh water, in other municipalities over 2.50 euros – and for wastewater the differences are often larger still, because sewer networks, treatment technology and topography weigh heavily. For your own calculation the rule is: do not use the national average, use the numbers from your last bill.

Why are prices rising? The rebuilding of sewer networks, stricter wastewater treatment rules, and the fixed-cost character of the infrastructure all feed through. When consumption falls, the largely fixed network costs spread across fewer cubic meters – so the price per cubic meter climbs even when total usage drops. That is no argument against saving, but it explains why the bill rarely shrinks.

Where the water really goes

Before you change anything, look at the distribution. According to the German Environment Agency, by far the largest share goes to bathing, showering and personal hygiene at around 36 percent. Right behind comes the toilet flush at about 27 percent – more than a quarter of the drinking water is literally flushed down the toilet. Laundry accounts for roughly 12 percent.

The rest splits across dishwashing and cleaning including the garden at about 6 percent each, plus food and drink at only around 4 percent. That last number is the key reality check: the water you actually drink and cook with is financially irrelevant. Saving on drinking water is saving at the wrong end. The levers clearly sit with the shower, the toilet and the washing machine – and that is exactly where the sensible measures apply.

The hidden lever: hot water costs more than water

Here is the point most saving guides skip. Hot water costs you twice: once as water from the tap and once as energy to heat it. And that second item is the bigger one. Around 15 percent of total household energy goes to heating water – after space heating, the second-largest energy block. As a rough rule: hot water ends up up to four times as expensive as cold water.

An example makes it tangible. If hot water is prepared by a central gas boiler, the energy for it runs roughly 150 to 250 euros per person per year. If an electric instant water heater does the job, the high electricity price pushes it to about 300 to 500 euros per person. In both cases the energy for hot water clearly exceeds the pure water price. That is why every warm shower you shorten is primarily an energy saving – and only secondarily a water saving.

The practical consequence: what counts most when saving is the hot-water share. Cold water for the toilet or the garden is cheap. It gets expensive where the boiler or the instant heater is running. That is exactly why the shower is the most rewarding starting point in the whole home.

Water-saving showerhead and aerator: the cheapest measures

A normal showerhead passes 12 to 15 liters per minute, a water-saving showerhead gets by on 6 to 8 – roughly half. Because the water saved is mostly hot water, the saving head cuts hot-water use by 30 to 50 percent without the shower feeling noticeably weaker; air injection keeps the jet full at half the volume. Price: about 20 to 50 euros. For a four-person family, savings of roughly 200 to 400 euros a year are realistic – water and energy combined. Almost nothing pays for itself faster.

The same principle applies in miniature to taps: an aerator mixes in air and throttles the flow from about 12 down to 5 or 6 liters per minute. It often costs under 10 euros, screws into the spout thread in a few minutes and goes unnoticed in daily use. On kitchen and bathroom taps that run many times a day, it adds up over the year. Together – saving showerhead plus aerators – these are the classic entry point with the best ratio of effort to effect.

Toilet stop button and small moves

Because the toilet swallows around 27 percent of the water, a second look at it pays off. Modern cisterns have a dual-flush with a large and a small button, or a stop button that halts the flush. A full flush often uses 6 to 9 liters, the saving function only 3 to 4. Anyone who consistently uses the small button saves several liters per flush – with four people and several visits a day, that quickly runs into tens of thousands of liters a year.

For older cisterns without a saving function, a simple trick helps: a water-filled container in the tank displaces volume and reduces the flush amount without disturbing operation. Just as important is checking for creeping losses. A dripping tap easily loses several thousand liters a year, a running cistern a multiple of that – often unnoticed because the water disappears silently into the bowl. A glance at the water meter during a quiet night reveals such leaks: if the counter turns while nothing is running, it is worth hunting down the fault.

Full loads: washing and dishes

The washing machine and dishwasher use a fixed amount of water per cycle – regardless of whether they are half or fully loaded. So the simplest rule is also the most effective: always run them full. Combining two half loads into one full load halves the water and energy of that cycle. The often-recommended pre-wash is unnecessary for normally soiled laundry and can be skipped.

For dishes, a modern dishwasher almost always beats washing by hand: a current appliance on its saving program gets by on about 6 to 10 liters per cycle, while hand-washing under running water quickly needs a multiple of that. The eco program is not slow out of stubbornness – it saves noticeable energy through lower temperature and longer soaking time, and energy, as shown, is the more expensive part. On most machines you can skip pre-rinsing under the tap entirely.

The garden in summer and rainwater

In summer, water use explodes wherever a garden is attached. A garden needs roughly 20 to 30 liters per square meter per week, with vegetable beds toward the upper end. For a mid-sized garden of 300 square meters, that quickly adds up over the five warm months to 90 to 150 cubic meters a year – an amount that can exceed household use and drives the summer bill up.

Two levers cut these costs sharply. First, the garden water meter: water that seeps into the garden does not enter the sewer – paying a wastewater fee on it is pointless. Many municipalities recognize a calibrated sub-meter and exempt the corresponding amount from the wastewater charge. At the garden volumes above, that alone saves the wastewater share on every cubic meter poured. Second, rainwater use: with rain barrels or a cistern you can replace roughly 30 to 60 percent of the tap-water demand in a typical home garden. A mulch layer additionally reduces evaporation, and watering in the early morning or evening rather than the midday heat works in the same direction.

Worked example: what adds up

Let us run a four-person household with about 180 cubic meters of annual use and a total water price of 5 euros per cubic meter. That is roughly 900 euros in water costs a year, plus the energy for hot water, which with central heating adds another rough 600 to 1,000 euros on top. So the hot-water share is not the side stage – it is often the bigger item.
