What is a URL slug?

A slug is the URL segment after the host that identifies a page uniquely, e.g. /tools/slug-generator. Good slugs are short, lowercase, use hyphens instead of spaces, and contain no special characters. They improve readability and SEO — Google explicitly recommends descriptive URLs.
